Podcast Interview: The Journey from IC Design to Precision Genomics

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, Jan. 29, 2021 – WASAI Technology Co-founder and CEO , Calvin Hung was proud to be a starring guest on the National Chiao-Tung University 967 FM 96.7 podcast. National Chiao-Tung University 967 is hosted by Hung-Wen Lin. Formally a reporter and deputy editor-in-chief of magazines, he is now an impressive columnist and programme host in financial forum. He has long been concerned with issues such that of industrial development, investment trends, corporate government and national competitiveness and many more. Through interviewing business operators who graduated from Chiao-Tung University, he helps convey the dreams and ambition of Chiao-Tung University and tells their story of entrepreneurship success for people to hear. During their podcast, They discussed the intricacies of starting up a brand new company and the challenges he faced and overcame in the creation of WASAI. This interview also focused on the field of genomic sequencing and how WASAI is revolutionizing the field through the use of the IC design technology. This interview provides the audience with valuable information about the field of genomics as well as provides information about starting up your own company guided by the experiences that Calvin has.

Genomics and Big Data

Since WASAI was founded in 2015, it was initially founded with the goal of piercing into the Big Data market. By 2020, WASAI started focusing on massive data of Genomics Analytics. Genomic Sequencing is a relatively new field that only began approximately 20 years ago. However, it is truly a booming field that has seen a high demand for technology to keep up with the even higher volume of data that must be processed when conducting Genomic Sequencing. Data is processed in three steps. Primary Sequencing uses blood tests to collect the patient’s DNA to have their genetic code compiled. Secondary Analysis takes the genetic data collected during Primary Sequencing and compares it to regular data to isolate variants. The third step analyzes those variants to detect mutations. Various advancements in supercomputing have allowed for these processes to become more time efficient. These forms of technology need to be capable of handling the massive quantities of data stored at customer data centers. WASAI Lighting utilizes the flexibility and power that FPGA allows. WASAI is partnered with Intel. Intel hardware has been revolutionary in the field of genomics.

Potential Applications and the Future of Precision Medicine

Precision Medicine is a rapidly growing field that has truly revolutionary potential to change the entire healthcare system. The main reason that Genomics is such a revolutionary tool for doctors is that it has unparalleled precision and accuracy. It can be used in the diagnosis of cancers such as stage 3 and 4 ovarian cancer. This type of cancer causes multiple separate genetic mutations that can only be accurately detected with Genomic Sequencing. Genomic Sequencing has also had an impact in the fight against the coronavirus. Genomic Sequencing has been used to analyze the genetic code of the virus and be used to create vaccines in order to combat the virus.
